Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why Now? In the last decade, the increasing popularity of ice skating and ice sports and a burgeoning population have led to an acute shortage of skating facilities within Northfield and the neighboring community. The problem is especially compounded with an aging facility, limited budget resources and no alternative/backup plan. Where will the new Arena go?Ice Now has identified 2 possible sites. What would it cost?Approximately $8-10 million dollars. Would it be only ice?No. The facility would be a year-round facility with one rink having ice 12 months and the other having turf for summer. The turf side can be used for soccer, lacrosse, shows, events, etc. What would be done with the existing arena? The existing facility is owned by City of Northfield. Ice Now would propose that the existing arena be torn down after the new facility is in place and sell the land and the proceeds applied to the debt of the new facility. Ice Now has obtained an appraisal on the existing site from Northfield Appraisal, Inc that appraisal puts the land value at approximately $800,000. How will it be financed?Through a partnership between city and major ice-user groups. Ice Now has identified three major groups that are interested in a partnership for a new facility. Who will run the arena?Multiple possibilities: City could outsource to a management group Joint Powers agreement could be drawn up between city and users. ICE NOW Board would oversee the management and operation of the facility. The BOARD could be made up of representatives of the major constituents and an annual appointment from the city. Will my user fees for ice go up?Yes. The facility would have to charge market rates. Northfield's ice rates are some of the lowest in the state. What is the timeline?
